BRENT SYKES
Middle School Advisor

Brent has been with the Breakthrough team since May of 2023. He graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in Social Studies Education in 2024, discovering a passion for youth work and advocacy that went beyond the classroom. For the past few years, he has worked with Breakthrough Twin Cities as the Middle School Advisor for students in both our Eastern Carver County site and our St. Paul site, serving as the Academic Advisor for 9th and 10th graders from the former.

Through this continued experience and enhanced understanding of youth work, development, and the potential for change, he discovered his natural alignment to social work and its importance. Beginning in 2026, Brent will be pursuing a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, intending to specialize in Community Practice. It is his hope that he will be able to enhance his ability to serve not just BTC families but the Twin Cities community at large.

While in graduate school, Brent will be serving as an Americorp Academic Success Fellow for Breakthrough 11th-12th grade students, using his extensive academic knowledge as a way to support and uplift the organization’s college-bound students. Whenever he has the free time, Brent enjoys listening to music, reading, and spending time with friends and loved ones. As of late, he has also been interested in watching movies, learning how to crochet, and going outdoors!
