Apply to Teach
Because it is an opportunity unlike any other available to high school and college students, the Breakthrough teaching fellowship is very competitive. For summer 2014, over 160 candidates completed the interview process for 42 positions. The application process is very rigorous. It is modeled after the fellowship experience itself, and it places teachers in several circumstances they will encounter during the summer. To do well, a candidate must present themselves effectively in multiple settings.
Step 1: Do The Research
The first step in applying for the Breakthrough teaching fellowship this summer is learning everything you possibly can about it. Please do the following before beginning an application:
Step 2: The Online Application
The online application is completed through the national Breakthrough Collaborative website. The application will be available in November 2014. In order for Breakthrough Twin Cities to have the right to consider you first, please pick Breakthrough Twin Cities as your #1 site preference nationally. Write your essays in a word document and paste your responses into the online application when you are finished. Follow all instructions closely. Depending on which sites you are applying to, there may be two application deadlines:
Step 3: Recommendation & Transcript
You will be asked to provide the contact information of a recommender during the application process. Your recommendation will be completed electronically. If you are invited to an interview you will also be asked to provide an unofficial transcript in advance of the interview in electronic form.
Step 4: The Teacher Interview Event
Interviews are granted on a rolling basis, so applying early will increase your chances of being invited to an interview! If invited to the interview stage, candidates will need to complete an in-person interview, or the interview alternative.
Step 5: Notification
After interviewing candidates (or reviewing alternative submissions for non-local candidates) we will send notifications. We strive to notify all candidates of their status no later than the first week of April.
